Working as a nursing assistant in France

Search for aide-soignant or aide-soignante, sometimes aide-soignant en gériatrie, in hospitals, clinics, EHPAD (nursing homes) and SSIAD (home nursing services). The profession is regulated: you need the Diplôme d'État d'aide-soignant (DEAS), prepared in an IFAS training institute, through apprenticeship or through VAE. The AFGSU emergency care certificate is also required. EU qualifications go through an authorisation procedure with the regional authority (DREETS); other foreign qualifications usually require the French diploma. A good level of French is expected for safety and handovers. In public hospitals, nursing assistants are recruited on the strength of the diploma, without a competitive exam.

How to read these figures

The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.

The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.

Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
