Working as a translator in France
Search for 'Traducteur' or 'Traductrice', with your field: 'traducteur technique', 'traducteur juridique', 'traducteur audiovisuel'. Translation is not a regulated profession in France, but certified translations of official documents (civil status records, diplomas, judgments) must be done by a 'traducteur expert judiciaire' registered with a court of appeal. Employers and agencies tend to recruit from master's programmes in translation such as ESIT, ISIT or university masters. Most translators work freelance under the micro-entrepreneur status or as an independent business, and literary translators are often paid as authors. Native English speakers are mostly sought for French into English work.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
