Working as a taxi driver in France
Driving a taxi is a regulated activity in France. You need a category B licence held for at least the legal minimum period, a clean criminal record, a medical check, the PSC1 first aid certificate and a pass in the taxi exam organised by the Chambres de métiers et de l'artisanat, which leads to the carte professionnelle for a given département. To work independently, you also need an autorisation de stationnement (the taxi licence plate) or to rent one. Continuous training is required to keep the card. Being a VTC driver is a separate status with its own exam. Search for « chauffeur de taxi », « conducteur de taxi », « taxi conventionné » or « chauffeur taxi salarié ».
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
