Working as a bus driver in France
Search for conducteur de bus, chauffeur de bus, conducteur receveur, machiniste-receveur (the RATP title in Paris), chauffeur de car and conducteur scolaire for school transport. Carrying passengers professionally is regulated: you need licence D (or D1 for small vehicles), a medical check, the passenger FIMO or a titre professionnel such as conducteur du transport en commun sur route, then the FCO every five years. The CAP conducteur agent d'accueil en autobus et autocar is another route. Operators of urban networks often recruit candidates with only a car licence and finance licence D themselves. EU licences are valid; others generally need exchanging.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
