Working as a plant operator in France

Search for conducteur d'engins, conducteur de pelle, conducteur de chargeuse, pilote d'engins or conducteur d'engins TP. Employers in France must give each operator a written driving authorisation, which in practice relies on the CACES R482 for construction machinery, obtained in the relevant categories through an approved test centre and renewed periodically. Operators working near buried networks must also hold the AIPR certificate. Recognised qualifications include the CAP Conducteur d'engins: travaux publics et carrières and the titre professionnel Conducteur de pelle hydraulique et de chargeuse pelleteuse. Foreign licences are generally not accepted as such, but experienced operators can usually pass the CACES after a short course.

How to read these figures

The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.

The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.

Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
