Working as a hairdresser in France
Search for coiffeur or coiffeuse, coiffeur mixte, coloriste or assistant coiffeur. The usual entry diploma is the CAP Métiers de la coiffure, often prepared through apprenticeship, followed by the BP Coiffure for experienced stylists. Working as an employee does not require a French diploma, but opening or managing a salon does: by law, each salon must be run or effectively supervised by someone holding the BP, the Brevet de maîtrise or an equivalent recognised qualification. Home hairdressing (coiffure à domicile) is common and often done as a self-employed micro-entrepreneur. Salons are usually closed on Monday and busiest on Saturday, and a trial service on a model is a standard part of hiring.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
