Stock controller resume example

A gestionnaire de stock makes sure that what the system says is in the warehouse is really on the shelves, and that the right quantities are there when orders come in.

The morning often starts with system reports: negative stock, items below reorder point, receipts not yet put away. You investigate discrepancies by recounting locations, checking movements in the WMS or ERP and correcting with a justified adjustment. You organise cycle counts during the year and the annual inventory with the accounting team, apply FIFO or FEFO rotation for dated products, and flag slow-moving or obsolete items. Depending on the company, you also place replenishment orders with suppliers, follow returns and quarantine stock, and help on the floor during receipts. In smaller sites the job mixes office work with forklift driving.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Holder of a Bac pro Logistique with an apprenticeship in a building materials distributor in [City]. I took part in cycle counts and the annual inventory, recorded receipts in the ERP and investigated stock discrepancies with the team leader.

Experienced

Stock controller with [x] years in a spare parts warehouse for industrial equipment. I manage cycle counts, investigate discrepancies, set reorder points with buyers and run the annual inventory with finance, in SAP MM and a WMS with RF scanners.

Career change

Former retail stockroom manager moving into warehouse stock control. In stores I handled receipts, shrinkage analysis and inventories, and I now want to apply that rigour on a larger site with a full WMS.

Tips

  • Name your WMS and ERP: recruiters search for SAP, Reflex, Generix or Sage X3 by keyword.
  • Describe the stock you handled: spare parts, food with dates, pharma batches, bulky goods.
  • Explain how you improved accuracy (cycle counts, location rules, training) rather than giving a vague percentage.
  • Mention CACES categories if the job includes floor work.
  • Show that you work with other teams: purchasing, finance, quality.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing stock control with picking, and describing only order preparation.
  • Leaving out the software, which is the main screening criterion.
  • Claiming accuracy rates you cannot explain in interview.
  • Ignoring regulatory contexts such as batch traceability in food or pharma.

Working as a stock controller in France

The job is not regulated. French employers look for a CAP or Bac pro Logistique, a BTS Gestion des transports et logistique associée (GTLA) or a titre professionnel in warehouse logistics, often combined with experience as a magasinier. A CACES R489 or R485 may be required when the post includes moving goods; legally, the employer must also issue a driving authorisation. Most WMS screens and procedures are in French, so reading French well matters. Search for « gestionnaire de stock », « gestionnaire des stocks », « contrôleur de stock », « magasinier gestionnaire » or « agent d'inventaire ».

Frequently asked questions

Is a stock controller the same as a magasinier?

They overlap. A magasinier mainly receives, stores and prepares goods. A gestionnaire de stock is responsible for the accuracy and level of stock: counts, adjustments, replenishment and analysis. In small sites one person does both, so job ads often mix the two titles.

Do I need a CACES to be a stock controller?

It depends on the site. If you will move pallets or check high locations, employers ask for CACES R489 in the relevant categories. In office-based stock roles at larger sites, it is a plus but not essential. Check the ad and mention it if you hold it.

Which Excel skills should I list?

Pivot tables and lookup functions are the minimum, because you will compare system extracts and count results. Conditional formatting and basic charts help for reports. Mention macros only if you have actually built them.
