Shop manager resume example

A shop manager runs a store as a small business within a network, whether a convenience store, a franchised food supermarket or a specialist chain store.

Mornings often start with the delivery check and the fresh products, then yesterday's sales figures and the staff schedule. The manager orders goods, applies the head office's promotions and layout plans, controls shrinkage and expiry dates, handles customer complaints and takes over the till when the queue grows. A large part of the role is people: recruiting, training and organising a team, managing absences and setting the weekly rota. In food stores, the manager is also responsible for hygiene rules and the cold chain. Results are measured on turnover, margin, stock and staff costs.

Working as a shop manager in France

Search for responsable de magasin, gérant de magasin, directeur de magasin, manager de supérette or gérant mandataire for some food networks. Employers usually expect a diploma from Bac+2 to Bac+5 in retail and distribution, such as the BTS Management commercial opérationnel, a licence professionnelle in retail the Titre professionnel Manager d'unité marchande or a business school bachelor, although promotion from sales assistant or department manager is common. In food retail the store must apply HACCP-based hygiene rules, with staff trained to handle fresh products, and selling alcohol, particularly at night, can require a specific permit for the person in charge. Opening hours on Sundays are regulated by local rules. Many stores belong to franchise networks, where the shop manager reports to the franchisee rather than to the brand.

Frequently asked questions

How do I show management results on a shop manager resume?

Choose a few indicators you worked on: turnover, margin, shrinkage, staff costs, customer satisfaction. Give the change you achieved with real figures you can prove, or use placeholders. Explain the actions behind the result, as recruiters care about method as much as numbers.

Should I mention franchise or mandate experience?

Yes. Running a franchise store, a company-owned branch or a store under a gérant mandataire contract involves different responsibilities. Say which one you had, because the recruiter needs to know if you have handled your own accounts or followed a parent company's budget.

Is a shop manager resume one or two pages?

Two pages are acceptable with several years of management. Keep the most recent store detailed and summarise earlier sales roles. Put your management skills and results near the top so they are seen in the first seconds.
