School supervisor resume example

A school supervisor in a French collège or lycée is officially an assistant d'éducation (AED), still called surveillant or 'pion' by pupils.

You work in the vie scolaire team under the CPE (conseiller principal d'éducation). The day starts at the gate, checking pupils in and the late arrivals. During the day you record absences and lateness in the school software, call families when a pupil is missing, supervise study periods when a teacher is absent, and watch the playground, corridors and canteen. You are often the first adult pupils come to with a problem: a lost card, a conflict, a pupil who feels unwell or is being bullied. In a boarding school, AEDs also supervise evening study and the dormitories at night.

Career change

After [x] years as a sports coach, I want to work with teenagers in a school. As an AED, I bring my experience in managing groups, setting limits and listening to young people, and I am considering the CPE exam in the longer term.

Tips

  • Mention your degree and current studies, since many AEDs are students.
  • List experience with teenagers: tutoring, coaching, summer camps.
  • Name the school software you know, especially Pronote.
  • Show your availability: weekly hours, boarding nights, exam periods.
  • If you plan to become a teacher or CPE, mention it: it is a common path.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing the job as 'watching pupils' with no mention of support or administration.
  • Confusing AED and AESH, which is the support role for pupils with disabilities.
  • Forgetting to mention the baccalauréat or equivalent.

Working as a school supervisor in France

Search for assistant d'éducation, AED, surveillant, surveillant d'internat or vie scolaire, and in private schools surveillant or éducateur de vie scolaire. In public schools, AEDs are contract staff hired by the head of the school, on fixed-term contracts that can be renewed and, after several years, converted to a permanent contract. You need the baccalauréat or an equivalent qualification. Boarding posts are often given priority to students. A separate scheme, AED en préprofessionnalisation, lets students preparing to teach work part-time in schools. Do not confuse the role with AESH, which supports pupils with disabilities. You need the right to work in France, and good spoken French.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AED role suited to students?

Yes, it was designed partly for them. Schools can adapt timetables, and some AED contracts are reserved for students preparing to teach. Say in your resume which year you are in and your weekly availability.

Should I list my studies first?

If you are a student, yes. Then list experience with young people. If you have work experience, put it first and keep education short. Head teachers want to see both your level and your contact with teenagers.

My diploma is foreign. Is it accepted?

The post requires a baccalauréat or an equivalent qualification. Foreign secondary diplomas are usually accepted if recognised as equivalent. Add a line explaining the level of your diploma and, if possible, attach a certificate of comparability.
