Office manager resume example

In France the title office manager is used mostly by start-ups, scale-ups, agencies and the French branches of international groups. The role sits between facilities, HR administration and executive support.

On a given week you might renegotiate the cleaning contract, order equipment for three new hires, plan their onboarding day, chase the landlord about a broken air conditioning unit, prepare the quarterly team event and update the register of visitors. You are often the first point of contact for suppliers and the person who knows where every contract is kept. In smaller companies you also handle expense reports, meal voucher orders and the link with the payroll provider. Good office managers make the workplace feel organised without anyone noticing the effort.

Tips

  • State team size and growth for each job. Running an office of fifteen and one of two hundred are different jobs.
  • Show the budget or contracts you were responsible for, using placeholders if you cannot share figures.
  • Name the HR and finance tools you used; French start-ups often rely on Lucca, Payfit, Spendesk or Swile.
  • Highlight one project: an office move, a new supplier, an onboarding process.
  • Mention your English level if you apply to international companies, where the role often involves foreign headquarters.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing the job as 'making coffee and ordering snacks', which undersells it.
  • Listing events without saying for how many people or with what budget.
  • Leaving out the HR admin side, which many French office managers carry.
  • Calling yourself office manager on a CV aimed at a traditional company that recruits 'assistant de direction'.

Working as an office manager in France

Office manager is not a regulated job in France, and the English title is used as is in French job ads. Recruiters expect a Bac+2 to Bac+5 in business, management or office administration (BTS Support à l'action managériale, licence pro, business school). Fluent French is needed in most roles because you deal with landlords, suppliers and administrative bodies, and you often handle French HR admin such as meal vouchers, the mutuelle or appointments with the occupational health service (médecine du travail). Search for 'office manager', 'responsable des services généraux', 'chargé des services généraux' and, in traditional companies, 'assistant de direction'.

Frequently asked questions

Is office manager the same as assistant de direction?

They overlap but differ. An assistant de direction mainly supports one or several executives: diary, travel, files. An office manager looks after the workplace and the whole team: facilities, suppliers, onboarding, events. Traditional French companies use the first title, start-ups and international firms the second.

Should I include workplace experience or employee experience?

If you organised rituals, welcome days or internal communication, yes. Some companies now advertise 'office and happiness manager' or 'workplace experience manager' roles. Describe what you actually did rather than relying on the label, which varies a lot between companies.

How technical should my IT section be?

You are not expected to be a system administrator. List the tools you managed accounts on, the hardware you ordered and set up, and any IT provider you coordinated with. Small companies often rely on the office manager for first-level support.
