Notary resume example

A French notaire is nothing like a notary public in the English-speaking world. It is a public officer appointed by the Minister of Justice, holding a lawyer's level of training, whose signature gives deeds an authentic status: they serve as proof and can be enforced without going to court.

Every property sale in France goes through a notaire, who checks the title, collects planning and tax information, holds the funds and registers the transfer. The rest of the week goes to inheritance files, gifts between parents and children, marriage contracts and civil partnerships, company formations and advice on family assets. A notaire runs or works in an office (étude) with clerks and formalities staff, meets clients in person for signatures and carries personal liability for every deed. Workloads peak with the property market and at year end.

Tips

  • State your exact status: diplômé notaire, notaire assistant, notaire salarié, clerk.
  • Mention your notarial diploma route and the office where you trained.
  • List the areas you handle alone and those you assist on.
  • Indicate the software and electronic deed tools you use.
  • Mention languages if you serve foreign buyers or heirs.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using "notary" for a clerk position, which misleads French recruiters.
  • Listing law courses rather than files actually handled.
  • Forgetting the volume and type of deeds you prepared.
  • Leaving out supervision of staff if you have done it.

Working as a notary in France

Notaire is a regulated profession in France. Access requires a master's in law followed by specialised notarial training combining study and practice in an office, leading to the notarial diploma; the notaire is then appointed by the Minister of Justice to an office, as holder, partner or salaried notaire. The profession is open to French and EU/EEA nationals. Foreign lawyers cannot sign deeds but can work as clerks or on international files. Search for "notaire salarié", "notaire assistant", "clerc de notaire", "rédacteur d'actes" or "formaliste".

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign lawyer become a notaire in France?

The profession is open to French and EU/EEA nationals who meet the diploma and training conditions, then are appointed by the Minister of Justice. Foreign law degrees are not enough on their own. A foreign-qualified lawyer can, however, work in a notarial office in a support or clerk role, especially for international files.

What is the difference between a notaire and a clerc de notaire?

The notaire is the public officer who signs and authenticates deeds and carries the liability. The clerk prepares files and drafts deeds under the notaire's control. Experienced clerks have significant autonomy, but cannot sign authentic deeds.

Is it worth specialising early?

Many notaires work across property, family and corporate matters, especially in smaller offices. Larger offices in cities have specialised departments. A clear strength in one area helps you stand out while showing that you can handle general files.
