In-house lawyer resume example

In France, a juriste d'entreprise is a legal professional employed by a company, a public body or an association, and the title is distinct from avocat (the regulated attorney who pleads in court).

Day to day, you draft and negotiate contracts with suppliers and customers, answer questions from sales, HR or purchasing teams, review general terms of sale, follow pre-litigation cases and brief the outside law firm when a dispute goes to court. Many juristes specialise: commercial contracts, employment law, real estate, intellectual property, data protection (RGPD), compliance with the Sapin II anti-corruption rules, or corporate law with board minutes and general meetings. In a small company you are often the only lawyer and cover everything; in a large group you sit in a legal department with a clear area of expertise.

Tips

  • State your speciality clearly in the headline: contracts, employment, corporate, IP, compliance.
  • Mention your Master 2 title and university, since French recruiters know the programmes.
  • Indicate the languages in which you negotiate contracts.
  • Show your link with operations: which teams you advised and on what.
  • If you are a former avocat, explain the move and mention whether you are still registered.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every area of law studied rather than the ones practised.
  • Writing "legal advice" without the type of questions and clients.
  • Calling yourself "avocat" when you are not registered with a bar.
  • Forgetting the business context of the companies you worked for.

Working as an in-house lawyer in France

The title juriste is not regulated, unlike avocat (attorney), which requires a law degree, the bar school and the CAPA. Most in-house lawyers hold a Master 2 in a specialised area of law, sometimes a CAPA, and French recruiters pay close attention to the programme and university. In-house legal advice has traditionally not enjoyed the professional secrecy that protects avocats, a point still debated, and an avocat who joins a company as an employee must ask to be removed from the bar roll (omission). Search for "juriste d'entreprise", "juriste droit des affaires", "juriste droit social", "juriste contrats", "juriste conformité" or "responsable juridique".

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign lawyer work as a juriste in France?

Yes. The juriste d'entreprise title is not regulated, so a foreign-qualified lawyer can be hired in-house. Employers will look for knowledge of French law, especially for contracts and employment issues, and often for a French master's or equivalent training. International groups value common law experience for cross-border deals.

Should I list my internships?

For entry-level roles, yes. French legal recruiters look closely at internships in law firms and legal departments, including the type of work done. After a few years, keep only the most relevant ones and focus on your current responsibilities.

Is the CAPA useful for an in-house role?

It is not required, but many juristes hold it or have practised as avocat. It signals solid training and experience of litigation. If you have it, mention it, and say whether you plan to stay in-house or keep a door open to the bar.
