Land surveyor resume example

In France, the word géomètre covers two different jobs. The technicien géomètre or géomètre-topographe measures the ground: with a total station, a GNSS receiver, a 3D laser scanner or a drone, you survey plots, buildings and road networks, set out foundations and check that structures are built where they should be.

Back at the office, you process the points in software such as Covadis or Trimble Business Center and produce plans in the Lambert 93 coordinate system. The géomètre-expert, a regulated liberal profession, is the only one allowed to fix legal property boundaries (bornage). Many technicians work in a géomètre-expert's practice, others in public works companies where they follow sites day after day, in all weathers.

Tips

  • Specify whether you worked in a géomètre-expert practice or for a contractor: the jobs differ.
  • List instruments by brand (Leica, Trimble, Topcon) and the software you process data with.
  • Mention French coordinate systems and accuracy classes if you have used them.
  • Add any drone pilot training, which requires a specific authorisation in France.
  • State your driving licence: field work involves daily travel.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calling yourself géomètre-expert without being registered with the Ordre.
  • Listing software without saying what you produced with it.
  • Forgetting the type of surveys: land, building, networks, monitoring.

Working as a land surveyor in France

Technicien géomètre and géomètre-topographe are not regulated jobs. Common French qualifications are the Bac pro géomètre, the BTS Métiers du géomètre-topographe et de la modélisation numérique, Licences professionnelles in topography and engineering degrees such as ESGT or INSA Strasbourg. Géomètre-expert is a regulated profession: only members of the Ordre des géomètres-experts can fix legal boundaries. Drone surveys require specific pilot training. Search « technicien géomètre », « géomètre-topographe », « topographe », « opérateur géomètre » or « géomètre projeteur ».

Frequently asked questions

Can I call myself géomètre-expert?

Only if you are registered with the Ordre des géomètres-experts. The title is protected and reserved for professionals who hold the required diploma and experience. As an employee, use « technicien géomètre », « géomètre-topographe » or « géomètre » with your specialty.

Is a foreign surveying degree recognised?

For technician and topographer roles, employers judge on skills and software, so a foreign degree can be enough. For the géomètre-expert profession, recognition goes through a specific procedure with the Ordre and may require extra training or tests.

Should I mention BIM or scanning?

Yes. Many practices now offer 3D surveys of existing buildings for architects. If you have processed point clouds or produced models in Revit or similar tools, say so clearly: it is often the deciding skill.
