Insurance advisor resume example

A conseiller en assurance sells and manages policies for individuals, self-employed people or small businesses.

In an agency of a mutual insurer or a general agent's office, your day mixes walk-in clients, phone calls and appointments: a young couple insuring their first flat, a craftsman who needs professional liability and decennial cover, a family comparing complementary health contracts. You analyse needs, compare guarantees and exclusions, issue quotes and sign contracts, then follow them through renewals, address changes and termination requests under the Loi Hamon rules (or Loi Lemoine for borrower insurance). Some advisers work on the phone in a customer centre, others in the field with business clients. Targets are part of the job, but so are duty-to-advise forms, which must show the product suits the client's situation.

Career change

Former retail team leader retraining in insurance after an intermediary training course. Years of advising customers and meeting sales targets prepared me for the commercial side; I now add product knowledge and the regulatory rules of insurance distribution.

Tips

  • Specify the market: individuals, professionals, farmers or businesses. Each requires different product knowledge.
  • Mention your insurance intermediary training level and any BTS or professional certificate.
  • Give the channel: agency, phone, field sales, and how many contracts or clients you handled.
  • Show retention work, not only new sales, since insurers care about keeping clients.
  • Name the products you sold most, with the technical points you master.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "sold insurance" without saying which products and to whom.
  • Ignoring compliance and duty-to-advise, which recruiters check.
  • Presenting aggressive sales figures with no mention of client satisfaction.
  • Leaving out Saturday or phone shift experience if the ad mentions it.

Working as an insurance advisor in France

Selling insurance in France is regulated through the insurance distribution rules: advisers must have a recognised professional capacity, gained through a diploma such as the BTS Assurance or through approved training, and complete continuing training each year. Intermediaries are registered with ORIAS, and the company handles this for salaried advisers. Insurers, mutuals (mutuelles) and general agents all recruit, with many work-study contracts. Search for "conseiller en assurance", "conseiller clientèle assurance", "chargé de clientèle IARD", "collaborateur d'agent général" or "conseiller commercial assurance".

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a specific diploma to sell insurance in France?

You need a recognised professional capacity, obtained through a diploma such as the BTS Assurance or through a certified training course and experience. Insurers often train new recruits themselves. Mention what you have so the employer knows whether you can sell from your first weeks.

Should I include my sales results?

Yes, but show balance: number of contracts, retention rate in words, client feedback. Insurers are wary of pure volume because poorly advised contracts lead to cancellations and complaints. Describe how you reached targets as much as the targets themselves.

How do I make a call centre job attractive on my résumé?

Describe the products, the type of calls (incoming, outgoing, retention) and the tools you used. Phone advising requires speed and precision, and many agencies value it. Say whether you signed contracts yourself or passed leads to an agency.
