Hotel manager resume example

A directeur d'hôtel is responsible for the whole property: rooms, reception, breakfast or restaurant, maintenance and finances. Your morning often starts with the daily report: occupancy, average rate, revenue per available room, arrivals and incidents of the night.

You meet department heads, follow the pricing strategy with revenue management, check online reviews and decide on group or corporate rates. You recruit and lead the teams, manage the budget and investments with the owners, and make sure the hotel complies with fire safety rules for public venues, hygiene rules for food service and the collection of the tourist tax. In a chain hotel you report to a regional director and apply brand standards; in an independent hotel you deal directly with the owner.

Tips

  • Describe each hotel precisely: number of rooms, category, independent or chain, city or resort.
  • Show financial responsibility with placeholders for occupancy, average rate and revenue.
  • Mention the systems you use: PMS, channel manager, revenue tools.
  • Highlight any renovation, opening or repositioning project.
  • List languages, since many hotels serve an international clientele.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing the reception role instead of overall management.
  • Forgetting revenue management, now central to the job.
  • Omitting safety and compliance responsibilities.
  • Not stating whether you reported to an owner or a group.

Working as a hotel manager in France

Search for "directeur d'hôtel", "directrice d'hôtel", "general manager" or "directeur d'exploitation hôtelière". The job is not regulated, but employers usually expect a BTS Management en hôtellerie-restauration, a hospitality school bachelor or master, or long experience in hotels. Hotels are public venues subject to fire safety rules and inspections by a safety committee. Hotels must collect the tourist tax and have foreign guests fill in a police registration form. Star ratings are awarded by Atout France. Running a hotel bar requires a licence and the permis d'exploitation. Most hotels apply the HCR collective agreement, and managers usually have executive (cadre) status.

Frequently asked questions

Does a hotel manager need a specific diploma in France?

No diploma is required by law. Most managers have a BTS Management en hôtellerie-restauration, a bachelor or master from a hospitality school, or a business school degree. Internal promotion from reception or department head is also common, especially in chains.

Should I put revenue figures on my resume?

Yes, if you can share them. Occupancy, average rate and RevPAR trends show your impact. Use placeholders and replace them with real figures, without disclosing confidential data from a former employer.

Should I name the hotel brands I have worked for?

Yes. Group recruiters know the standards, systems and reporting of each brand, so naming them saves explanation. For an independent hotel, add what you would keep from a chain (procedures, revenue tools) and what you would leave aside, since owners often fear a manager who runs their hotel like a franchise.
