Dock worker resume example

In France, an agent de quai works on the loading docks of a warehouse or parcel hub, not in a seaport.

The shift is set by truck arrivals: you open the dock door, check the delivery note or CMR against what comes off the trailer, count pallets and parcels, and write reservations on the document if something is damaged or missing. You then scan the goods, break down mixed pallets and sort parcels by delivery round or destination. On the outbound side, you prepare and load trailers in the right order, secure the load with straps and seal the doors. In parcel and cross-docking hubs, much of the work happens at night or very early, with strict departure times for the trucks. You use a hand pallet truck, an electric pallet truck and often a forklift.

Motivated candidate holding a CACES R489 category 1A and 1B obtained through a training programme, with temporary missions in a parcel sorting centre in [City]. Used to physical work, early shifts and handheld scanners.

Experienced

Dock worker with [x] years in a road haulage cross-docking platform. I unload and load trailers, check deliveries against documents, record reservations on damaged goods and organise loading by delivery round to meet truck departure times.

Career change

Former construction labourer moving into logistics. I am used to handling heavy loads safely, working outdoors in all weather and following a site schedule, and I recently obtained my forklift CACES to work on loading docks.

Tips

  • Put your CACES categories and their validity dates near the top of the resume.
  • Mention the type of site: parcel hub, cross-docking, retail distribution centre, cold storage.
  • Say which shifts you can work (night, early morning, weekends), since it is often the first filter.
  • Name the equipment you can use, from hand pallet truck to reach truck.
  • Keep it to one page and list temporary missions grouped by agency if you had many.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing « warehouse work » without saying whether you loaded, sorted or picked.
  • Forgetting expired CACES dates or listing categories you never held.
  • Leaving long gaps unexplained when they were in fact temporary missions.
  • Overlooking cold storage or night work experience, which employers value.

Working as a dock worker in France

No diploma is required. A CAP Opérateur/opératrice logistique, a Bac pro Logistique or a titre professionnel such as Agent magasinier helps, and a CACES R489 for pallet trucks and forklifts is asked for in most ads. Strictly speaking, the law requires the employer's driving authorisation after training; the CACES is the standard proof. Temporary agencies are a common way in, and night or early shifts are frequent in parcel hubs. Basic spoken French is enough to start, but reading delivery documents is part of the job. Search for « agent de quai », « manutentionnaire quai », « agent de messagerie » or « cariste quai ».

Frequently asked questions

Is CACES mandatory to work as a dock worker?

French law requires the employer to give you a driving authorisation (autorisation de conduite) before you drive a forklift or ride-on pallet truck, after checking your training and fitness. The CACES is the usual way to prove that training, so most employers ask for it, but a hand pallet truck needs none.

Can I get a dock worker job through a temporary agency?

Yes, temporary agencies are a main entry route in French logistics, especially before peak seasons. Register with several agencies near logistics zones, bring your CACES certificates and say clearly which shifts you accept. Good missions often lead to a fixed-term or permanent contract.

Does agent de quai mean port docker?

No. An agent de quai works on warehouse loading docks. Port dockers are called dockers or ouvriers dockers and work under a specific status in seaports. Use « agent de quai » for warehouse and transport platform jobs.
