Working as a bartender in France
In France, search for barman or barmaid, bartender, commis de bar, chef barman or mixologue. No diploma is legally required for employees, but employers recognise the CAP Commercialisation et services en hôtel-café-restaurant, the Bac pro Commercialisation et services en restauration, the specialist certificate for barmen and the BP Barman. The owner or manager of the establishment, not the bartender, holds the alcohol licence and the operating permit (permis d'exploitation). Selling alcohol to anyone under 18 and serving visibly drunk customers are both prohibited, and bartenders are expected to enforce this. Expect late nights, weekends and seasonal contracts in ski and beach resorts. French spirits, wines and aperitif culture are part of the knowledge expected.
