Machinist cover letter example

A workshop manager wants to know three things: which machines and controls you can set up alone, which tolerances and materials you are used to, and whether your shift availability matches theirs.

Give one concrete example of a difficult part or a drift you caught in time.

Subject: Application: CNC Machinist (Setter-Operator), [Company]

Dear [Mr/Ms Last Name],

Your advertisement for a CNC setter-operator in milling at your [City] site matches what I have done for the past [x] years at [Company], a subcontractor for the aerospace industry. I would like to bring that experience to your workshop.

I set up and run 3 and 5-axis machining centres on Heidenhain and Fanuc controls, mainly on aluminium and titanium brackets with tolerances down to a few hundredths. I prepare tools on the presetter, set the work offsets, run the first part and validate it with the CMM report before launching the batch. Last spring, I noticed a slow dimensional drift on a long batch of titanium parts: by checking tool wear more often and adjusting the offsets, we finished the order without scrap and the methods team updated the tool life in the routing.

I hold a Bac pro TRPM and I am used to working in 2x8 with handovers to the next team. I can also do simple program edits at the machine when a cycle needs to be adjusted.

I would be glad to visit your workshop and discuss your machines and parts with you.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Machines, number of axes and CNC controls you master
  • Materials and tolerance levels you handle
  • Setting versus operating: your real level
  • A part or problem that shows your precision
  • Shift availability (2x8, 3x8, weekends)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sending the same letter to a toolroom and a high-volume screw machine shop.
  • Talking about passion for mechanics without naming a single machine.
  • Hiding that you only operate when the job asks for setting.
  • Ignoring the shift pattern mentioned in the ad.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter required for machinist jobs in France?

Many workshops and temp agencies hire on the resume alone, but a short letter helps when you change sector or region. Keep it to a few paragraphs focused on machines, controls, tolerances and availability.

Should I apply through temp agencies?

Yes, it is a common route in French industry. Agencies specialised in industry place setters and machinists on missions that often lead to a permanent contract (CDI). Send them a resume listing your controls and machines precisely so they can match you quickly.

How do I present a foreign machining diploma?

Give its name, length and level, and describe the machines and controls you trained on. Machining is not regulated in France, so workshops mostly judge your practical level, sometimes with a short test on a drawing or at the machine.
