HR manager cover letter example

A French recruiter reading an HR manager's cover letter (lettre de motivation) looks for two things: that you understand the company's social context, and that you can be trusted with sensitive situations.

Mention the headcount, the presence of a CSE or unions, and a project you led from start to finish. Keep it to one page and avoid generic praise of people management.

Subject: Application for the HR Manager position, ref. [Reference]

Dear [Recruiter's Name],

I am applying for the HR Manager position at [Company] in [City]. For the past [x] years I have been the HR manager of a [sector] company of around [x] employees spread over two sites, where I report directly to the managing director and cover the full HR scope with one HR assistant.

Most of my time goes into employee relations. I prepare and chair the CSE meetings, led the last two rounds of mandatory annual negotiations and signed a remote work agreement with the union delegates last year. I also support site managers on individual cases, from the first informal talk to the formal procedure, always with our employment lawyer in the loop when the risk justifies it.

Your job description mentions the move to a new HRIS and the merger of two collective agreements after the acquisition of [Company B]. I ran a similar HRIS project in [Year]: choosing the tool with the finance team, cleaning the employee data, then training managers site by site. I know how much these changes worry staff, and how important it is to explain them to the CSE early.

I would be glad to walk you through the HRIS project and the remote work negotiation in more detail when we meet.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name][Phone]

What to highlight

  • The size and type of organisations where you handled HR
  • Your concrete experience with the CSE and collective bargaining
  • One change project you led, such as an HRIS rollout or a remote work agreement
  • How you support managers on individual cases
  • Your knowledge of the collective agreement relevant to the employer's sector

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing about your passion for people instead of the HR files you have handled.
  • Ignoring the employer's sector and collective agreement when they are named in the ad.
  • Sending an English letter to a French SME whose staff and CSE work in French.
  • Promising quick change in a company you do not know yet, which worries recruiters about staff relations.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an HR manager cover letter be?

One page, four or five short paragraphs. French recruiters read many letters for HR roles and expect you to show synthesis skills there, since you will write procedures and letters to employees. Put detailed project descriptions in the interview, not in the letter.

Should I mention a dismissal or dispute I managed?

You can mention that you handled individual disputes and procedures, but stay general. Never name people or give details that could identify them. Recruiters judge your discretion as much as your experience on these points.

Is a cover letter still expected for HR roles in France?

For an HR manager role, almost always. Even when the online form makes it optional, HR directors and managing directors read it closely because writing quality matters in the job. A short, specific letter is far better than none.
