HR director cover letter example

Applications for HR director roles often go through executive search firms, and the letter is read by the CEO. It should read like a short business case: the company's situation, what you have done in comparable situations and what you would bring.

Keep it sober and concrete. Confidentiality matters, so avoid naming sensitive cases.

Subject: Application: Directeur des ressources humaines, [Company]

Dear [CEO's name],

I am applying for the position of HR director at [Company]. Your plan to integrate the two companies acquired last year means harmonising status, pay and working time across sites. I led a similar integration at [Current company] and would like to bring that experience to your team.

As HR director of [Current company], a [sector] group of [x] employees, I sit on the executive committee and manage a team of [x]. After the merger with [Company acquired], I led the negotiation of a harmonisation agreement with the unions of both entities. It took nine months of discussion, but it was signed by unions representing a majority of the votes and avoided a conflict on the shop floor.

I have also negotiated agreements on remote work and profit-sharing, prepared the mandatory annual negotiations each year and kept a working relationship with the CSE built on regular, honest information. When we reorganised the sales network, the consultation was completed on schedule without litigation.

Beyond labour relations, I have worked on skills planning tied to the business plan and on developing managers, who are the first line of HR in practice. I believe a DRH is useful when operational directors see HR as helping them deliver, not as a constraint.

I would welcome the chance to discuss your integration plan with you.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name]

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter needed when a headhunter is involved?

Often the headhunter asks for a short note instead of a full letter. Write a few paragraphs explaining why this role and company interest you and what you bring. The headhunter will use it to present your profile to the CEO.

How do I mention results without breaking confidentiality?

Describe outcomes in general terms: agreement signed, consultation completed on time, absenteeism reduced, turnover stabilised. Use placeholders for figures if you share the letter widely. Never name individuals or detail ongoing disputes.

Should I write differently for a family business and a listed group?

Yes. A family business will look for someone close to the field who can structure HR without heavy processes. A listed group will expect experience with HR reporting, international coordination and governance. Adjust your examples to match.
