Heating engineer cover letter example

A heating contractor wants to know three things quickly: what equipment you can service or install, whether you can work alone at a customer's home, and which certificates you hold.

Keep the letter short and technical, and show you understand that a winter breakdown means a family without heating.

Subject: Application for Heating Maintenance Technician, [City] area

Dear [Manager's name],

I am applying for the heating maintenance technician position at [Company]. Your fleet covers both individual gas boilers and air-to-water heat pumps in [area], which matches the work I have been doing for the past [x] years.

At [Current company], I run a daily round of service visits and breakdown calls on condensing boilers from [brands] and on heat pumps installed by our team. I carry out combustion analysis, replace boards, pumps and sensors, and complete the maintenance certificate for each customer. I hold the refrigerant handling certificate, which allows me to commission heat pumps and check the circuit. During the winter season I take part in the on-call rota, and I have learned to give the customer an honest diagnosis and a clear quote before starting any repair.

I am looking for a company with a structured maintenance activity and manufacturer training, which is why your team interests me. I hold a full driving licence and I am used to managing my van stock so that most repairs are done on the first visit.

I would be glad to meet you or to spend a day on the road with one of your technicians.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Your qualification and refrigerant certificate
  • The boilers and heat pumps you know
  • Your experience of breakdowns versus installation
  • Your autonomy and relationship with customers
  • Your driving licence and availability for on-call duty

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not mentioning the refrigerant certificate when applying for heat pump work.
  • Describing yourself as a plumber when the role is mainly heating diagnostics.
  • Forgetting to say whether you accept on-call duty in winter.
  • Sending the same letter to an installer and to a maintenance company.

Frequently asked questions

Do heating companies in France read cover letters?

Larger maintenance companies and facilities groups usually ask for one through their job portals. Small installers often call candidates directly after reading the CV. A short letter still helps by stating your certificates and equipment knowledge, which saves the employer a phone call.

Should I mention that I am RGE trained?

RGE is a label held by the company, not by the individual, but it requires a trained technical referent. If you have followed a recognised training course for heat pumps or energy renovation, mention it: it can help the company maintain its label and access renovation grants for its customers.

How long should my letter be?

Four short paragraphs are enough. The manager reading it is often a former technician who wants facts: your equipment, your certificates, your type of work and your availability. Leave details about pay, van and tools for the interview.
