Hairdresser cover letter example

Salon managers read letters quickly and then judge you on a trial service, often a cut or a blow-dry on a model. Use the letter to show that you know their salon, its clientele and its style, to point to your strongest techniques and to make the trial easy to arrange.

Subject: Application for Hairdresser position, [Salon name]

Dear [Manager's name],

I am applying for the hairdresser position at [Salon name]. I walk past the salon regularly and I have noticed how much of your work is soft balayage and natural-looking colour on long hair. That is the area I have spent the last [x] years developing, and I would like to keep growing in a team that takes colour seriously.

I hold the CAP Métiers de la coiffure, completed through an apprenticeship at [Previous salon] in [City], and I am now preparing the BP Coiffure. At [Previous salon] I worked on a mixed clientele with full days of cuts, colour and blow-dries. I learned to plan colour timings so that several clients could be in progress without anyone waiting, and to keep colour cards that any colleague could follow. Some of my regular clients have told me they would follow me if I moved within [City].

You can see my recent work, all done by me, here: [portfolio link]. I would be glad to come in for a trial on a model of your choice, so you can judge my cutting and blow-dry technique directly.

I am available on Saturdays and late opening evenings, and I can start on [date].

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Will the salon ask me to do a trial?

Almost always. Expect a cut, colour or blow-dry on a model, sometimes one you bring yourself. Ask in advance which service they want to see and which products the salon uses, arrive with your own scissors and brushes, and keep your station clean while you work.

Can I apply with a diploma from outside France?

Yes. Employees do not need a French diploma to work in a salon, so a foreign qualification and a good trial can be enough. Explain your training in plain terms (length, techniques covered) and consider asking the ENIC-NARIC centre for a comparability statement to reassure the employer.

Should I mention that I bring regular clients?

Only if it is realistic. Saying that some regulars would follow you is fair; inventing numbers is not. Be aware that some employment contracts include a non-competition clause, so check what you signed with your previous salon before promising anything.
