Crane operator cover letter example

For crane operators, the letter is mostly about trust: the employer wants proof that you hold the right certificates, that you have handled the type of loads on their sites, and that you will stop a lift when it is not safe.

Keep it factual and short.

Subject: Application: Tower crane operator (grutier), [Company], [City]

Dear [Recruiter's Name],

I would like to apply for the tower crane operator position on your [Project or City] site. I have held the CACES R487 for [x] years and I have worked mainly on concrete housing projects for builders in [Region].

On my last site, I operated a top-slewing crane serving two formwork teams and a precast supplier. I start each day with the required checks and the logbook, and I agree with the site manager on the lifting order before the first concrete pour. When the wind rose above the manufacturer's limit during a precast delivery, I stopped the lifts and we rescheduled the end of the delivery for the next morning, without damage or incident.

I am used to sharing the airspace with other cranes and to working by radio with slingers I have just met. I can also assist the team during assembly and dismantling of the crane. Before moving into the cab, I worked two years as a slinger, so I know what the team on the ground needs from the operator: smooth movements, clear radio messages and patience during precise placements.

I am available from [Date] and can travel for long-term sites. I would be happy to discuss the position with you.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • CACES categories and validity
  • Crane types and sites worked on
  • Your safety habits: checks, wind, stopping a lift
  • Teamwork with slingers and the site manager
  • Mobility and availability

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not giving the CACES category and number.
  • Talking about speed rather than safety and precision.
  • Leaving out your availability date, which matters for site planning.
  • Using a long letter when a temp agency only needs the key facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter needed for crane jobs?

Large builders still ask for one for permanent posts. Temp agencies, which place many crane operators, usually need only a resume and your certificates. In both cases, a few lines stating your categories and availability help you get called first.

Should I mention incidents?

Mention a situation where you stopped or adapted a lift for safety reasons. It reassures employers. Do not describe accidents in the letter; if one is on record, be ready to explain calmly in the interview what was learned.

Can I apply without site experience?

It is harder, but possible after a CACES course that includes practical hours. Highlight any time spent on a building site, even as a labourer, and say you are ready to start as a slinger or on smaller cranes.
