Construction manager cover letter example

Contractors hiring a construction manager look for someone who protects their margin and their reputation. Your letter should show the projects you have managed, your control of costs and subcontractors, and how you work with clients and architects.

Be specific about phases you handled.

Subject: Application for Construction Manager, residential projects

Dear [Manager's name],

For the past [x] years I have worked as conducteur de travaux at [Current company] on projects similar to your housing and school programmes in [region]. I am applying for the construction manager position you advertised.

After an engineering degree in civil engineering, I joined [Current company] as a works engineer, then became construction manager. I currently manage [x] residential projects, from preparation to final account. I break down the budget from the tender, plan the phases, select and contract subcontractors for finishing trades, and supervise two site supervisors. I lead weekly site meetings with the client's project manager and the architect, and I follow costs every month, including change orders, which I negotiate and document.

On my last project, an occupied renovation of a residential building, I organised the phasing with the social landlord so that tenants kept access to their homes throughout the works. The project was handed over on schedule and the reserves were lifted within the contractual period.

I would be happy to talk about your project pipeline and the part of it I could take over.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Should I give project budgets in the letter?

You can mention the order of magnitude of projects if you are comfortable, or use placeholders on the CV. What matters most is your role on the budget: did you build it, follow it, defend the margin? Recruiters ask about this in the interview anyway.

Is English useful for this role in France?

It can be for international contractors, large infrastructure projects or foreign clients, but French remains essential. You negotiate with French subcontractors, write site meeting minutes and work with French contract documents. Mention your French level clearly.

How do I present experience gained abroad?

Describe the projects, your role and the contract type, then show what transfers to France: budget control, subcontractor management, safety. Mention that you know or are learning French practices such as handover reserves, the ten-year liability and public procurement rules.
