Cashier cover letter example

Store managers want to know if you are trustworthy with cash, polite under pressure and available when the store is busiest. A cashier cover letter is short: often a few lines in an online form, or a brief note with a resume dropped off at the service desk.

Subject: Application for a cashier position, [Store name] [City]

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your [Store name] store in [City] is looking for a cashier, and I would like to put myself forward. I live a short distance from the store and I am available on weekday evenings and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

I worked for [x] months as a cashier at [Previous store], where I handled the tills and supervised the self-checkout area. I learned to open and close my till carefully, to count my float before each shift and to follow the procedure when a payment did not go through. My till was regularly checked by the manager and balanced at the end of my shifts.

What I enjoy in this job is the contact with regular customers. When the queue is long or a customer is unhappy about a price, I stay polite, call a colleague for a price check if needed and keep the line moving. I also help older customers with the self-checkouts, which some find confusing.

I am used to variable schedules and I can adapt to the store's planning. I would be glad to meet you for an interview.

Yours faithfully,[First name Last name][Phone number]

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention I am a student?

Yes. Many stores build schedules around students and appreciate knowing your timetable constraints from the start. Say which days and hours you can work during term and holidays. International students should also mention that their permit allows work.

Is it better to apply online or in store?

Both work. Large chains centralise applications online, but leaving a resume at the customer service desk and asking for the checkout manager can speed things up. Mention in your message which store you are applying to.

What tone should the letter have?

Polite and simple. Use 'Madame, Monsieur' if writing in French, short sentences and concrete facts. Avoid exaggerated enthusiasm: the manager wants to see a calm, reliable person, which the tone of your letter should reflect.
