CAD technician cover letter example

Design office managers read a projeteur's letter to check three things: your speciality, your software, and whether you can work with limited supervision on a set of drawings.

One example of a project you followed through to execution drawings is more convincing than a list of qualities.

Subject: Application: Dessinateur-projeteur béton armé, [Company], [City]

Dear [Recruiter's Name],

I am applying for the dessinateur-projeteur position in your structural design office. Since my BTS Bâtiment, I have worked for [x] years in a reinforced concrete design office in [City], mainly on housing and school buildings.

I produce formwork and rebar drawings in Revit and AutoCAD from the engineers' calculation notes, from the PRO phase through to execution. On a recent school project, I managed the full drawing set for the foundations and ground floor, coordinated the structural model with the architect through IFC exchanges and handled site queries during the works. When the contractor asked to switch to precast floor slabs, I reworked the support details with the engineer within the week. I keep drawing registers and revision indices up to date, so that the site always works from the latest version.

Your office works on larger public buildings and in full BIM, which is the direction I want to take. I would also like to learn Tekla for mixed concrete and steel structures, which appear in several of your projects. I have also followed a short course on IFC exchanges and model checking, which I use on every project.

I would be pleased to show you examples of my drawings during an interview.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • Speciality: concrete, steel, timber, VRD
  • Software and BIM experience
  • Project phases handled
  • Your level of autonomy on a drawing set
  • Relations with engineers, architects and sites

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not naming your structural speciality.
  • Saying you master BIM without giving a concrete example.
  • Writing in vague terms about precision instead of showing a drawing set you managed.
  • Attaching confidential client drawings to an application.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send drawing samples with my letter?

Yes, as a short PDF of two or three anonymised extracts, with client names and addresses removed. Check with your current or former employer if you are unsure. Many recruiters prefer to see samples during the interview on your laptop.

Does mechanical CAD experience count?

Partly. In industry, the same French title covers machine and part design in SolidWorks or Catia, which is a different job from building drawings. Your rigour with drawing standards and revisions transfers, but say plainly that you need to learn construction details, and mention any AutoCAD or Revit practice you already have.

How do I present a foreign diploma?

Give its name, length and main subjects, and the closest French level, such as BTS (two years) or Licence professionnelle (three years). An ENIC-NARIC comparability statement can help for larger employers. Your software skills and drawing examples will often count more.
