Working as a video editor in France
Search for 'Monteur vidéo' or 'Monteuse vidéo', 'Chef monteur' for senior roles and 'Assistant monteur' to start. The profession is not regulated, but the usual entry route is the BTS Métiers de l'audiovisuel (montage et postproduction option), a film school such as La Fémis or ENS Louis-Lumière, or a professional course. Much of the work is offered on CDD d'usage, short fixed-term contracts specific to the audiovisual sector, and many editors build their income around the intermittent du spectacle unemployment scheme. Broadcasters work mostly in French, so understanding French dialogue in rushes is essential for documentary and TV editing.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
