Working as a general practitioner in France
To practise as a GP in France you need the Diplôme d'État de docteur en médecine with the DES de médecine générale, followed by registration with the Ordre des médecins in your département. Doctors with an EU qualification usually benefit from automatic recognition but still register with the Ordre and need adequate French. Doctors trained outside the EU go through the authorisation procedure (procédure d'autorisation d'exercice), which includes knowledge tests and a supervised period. When you search, use « médecin généraliste », « médecin collaborateur », « médecin remplaçant » or « médecin salarié centre de santé ».
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
