Working as a fishmonger in France
Search for poissonnier or poissonnière, poissonnier écailler, écailler for restaurants and brasseries, or employé rayon marée in supermarkets. Employees do not need a diploma by law; the usual French qualifications are the CAP Poissonnier écailler and the Bac pro Poissonnier écailler traiteur, and CQPs (certificats de qualification professionnelle) in seafood sales let supermarket chains train staff in-house. Opening your own shop requires a recognised qualification or proven experience. Labels must show species, catch area or country of farming, and whether the product was caught or farmed. Days start very early, weekends are worked, and the end-of-year season is the busiest time for oysters and seafood platters.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
