Working as a dentist in France

Dentistry is a regulated profession in France. You need the Diplôme d'État de docteur en chirurgie dentaire, or an EU diploma recognised automatically, and registration with the Ordre des chirurgiens-dentistes. Dentists with non-EU diplomas follow the authorisation procedure for foreign-trained practitioners, which includes an exam. Orthodontics and oral surgery are separate specialties with their own DES. Most dentists start as collaborators before setting up a practice. Search for « chirurgien-dentiste », « collaborateur chirurgien-dentiste », « dentiste salarié » or « dentiste centre de santé ».

How to read these figures

The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.

The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.

Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
