Working as an after-school activity leader in France
Search for animateur périscolaire, animatrice enfance, animateur ALSH (accueil de loisirs sans hébergement), animateur cantine or, in the public sector, adjoint d'animation. Activities for groups of minors are regulated: accueils de loisirs must employ a minimum share of qualified staff. The BAFA, a non-professional certificate open from age 17, is the usual entry point. Professional qualifications include the CPJEPS and the BPJEPS Loisirs tous publics, and the BAFD for directors. Many posts are part-time with split hours, so check whether the town offers additional hours on Wednesdays and holidays. Employers check criminal records, and you need enough French to supervise children and talk to parents.
How to read these figures
The salary shown is an average, not a median: a few high salaries pull the average up. It is net pay before income tax, converted to full time.
The gross figure is an estimate: it applies 2026 employee contributions for a private-sector worker to the net salary. It leaves out bonuses, overtime and health insurance.
Salaries are from 2024 while the minimum wage is the 2026 one, so the comparison gives an order of magnitude.
