Travel agent resume example

A conseiller en voyages helps clients choose and book trips, in a high-street agency, a call centre or an online travel company.

In a leisure agency, you listen to what the client wants (budget, dates, travelling with children, beach or tour), compare tour operator packages, build tailor-made itineraries, and book flights, hotels, car hire and insurance. You check passport and visa requirements, issue travel documents and handle payments. When something goes wrong, from a cancelled flight to a strike or a natural event at destination, you rebook and look after clients who may be stressed. In business travel agencies, the work is faster: you manage bookings for company employees according to their travel policy, using global distribution systems (GDS) and online booking tools. Sales targets and commission on extras are part of the job in many agencies.

Tips

  • Name the GDS and booking tools you use, as agencies filter on them.
  • Separate leisure and business travel experience: recruiters look for one or the other.
  • List destinations you know personally, especially long-haul ones.
  • Show languages with a level, since many clients are foreign or travel abroad.
  • Mention after-sales handling, which shows you can manage problems as well as sales.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "passion for travel" without sales or booking experience.
  • Leaving out sales results when the job ad mentions targets.
  • Forgetting to mention GDS training or certifications.
  • Listing every country you have visited instead of those you can sell.

Working as a travel agent in France

Conseiller en voyages is not a regulated job for employees in France, although travel agencies themselves must be registered with Atout France to sell packages. Most recruiters expect a BTS Tourisme, a tourism BUT or a professional degree, and GDS skills such as Amadeus. French is essential for most agencies, with English and another language valued. Business travel agencies and online travel companies sometimes recruit in English. Search for « conseiller en voyages », « agent de voyages », « forfaitiste », « conseiller voyages d'affaires » or « travel consultant ».

Frequently asked questions

Which diploma do travel agencies expect?

The BTS Tourisme is the most common, followed by a tourism BUT or professional degree. Agencies also hire sales profiles from other sectors if they show customer skills and languages. A GDS training course, such as Amadeus, is a practical addition when you do not have a tourism diploma.

Is the travel agent job still relevant with online booking?

Yes, but it has shifted towards complex trips, long-haul tailor-made travel, groups and business travel, where clients want advice and support when things go wrong. Show on your CV that you can handle these files, not only simple bookings.

How do I present destination knowledge?

Create a short section with the regions you know well, how (trip, stay abroad, training from a tour operator) and what you could sell there. Recruiters value a consultant who can talk about a destination from experience, especially for tailor-made long-haul trips.
