Personal trainer resume example

A personal trainer in France (coach sportif or éducateur sportif in fitness) works in a gym, a CrossFit box, a company or directly with private clients at home and in parks.

In a gym, part of your day is on the floor: welcoming members, correcting technique on machines and free weights, building programmes. The rest is group classes such as circuit training, pilates or cycling, and paid one-to-one sessions. Independent coaches spend more time on organisation: travelling between clients, early-morning and evening sessions, invoicing and finding new clients. With each person you start with an assessment of goals, history and limits, then design a progression, adapt it to injuries or pregnancy, track results and keep motivation going over months.

Tips

  • Put your diploma and the mention of your professional card at the top.
  • Specify your mentions: strength and weight training, group classes, adapted activity.
  • List the class formats you can teach alone.
  • Show your client base or sales results with honest placeholders.
  • Mention sport-specific experience as a competitor or club coach.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting only your own sports results without coaching experience.
  • Giving nutritional or medical advice beyond your scope on the resume.
  • Forgetting to mention the professional card.

Working as a personal trainer in France

Search for coach sportif, éducateur sportif, coach fitness, préparateur physique or coach à domicile. Teaching or coaching sport for pay is regulated by the Code du sport. You need a diploma, title or CQP listed in the Code, such as the BPJEPS Activités de la forme, a STAPS degree or a fitness CQP, and you must declare your activity to obtain a professional card (carte professionnelle d'éducateur sportif), renewed periodically. Private certifications from abroad are often not recognised. EU qualifications can be assessed for recognition, and other candidates usually take a French diploma. Many coaches work under micro-entrepreneur status. Clients and gyms communicate in French, so a working level is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is my foreign personal trainer certificate valid in France?

Not directly. Teaching sport for pay is regulated, and private certifications are often not recognised. EU qualifications can be assessed by the authorities for a professional card. In other cases, coaches usually take a French diploma such as the BPJEPS.

Should I add photos of my physique?

No. A professional headshot is enough if you want a photo. Gyms and clients want to see your skills and results with others, not before-and-after pictures of yourself or gym selfies.

How do I show independent coaching on a resume?

Present it as a job: 'Coach sportif indépendant' with the period, the types of clients, the services and where you coach. Mention your micro-entreprise status if you have one, since it shows you can manage invoicing.
