Dental nurse resume example

A dental nurse in France (assistant or assistante dentaire) works chairside with the dentist and runs much of the practice around them.

Clinically, you prepare the surgery before each patient, pass instruments during treatment (the four-handed work French dentists expect), mix materials, operate suction and help with implant or extraction procedures. Between patients, you clean and disinfect the room, then put instruments through the sterilisation circuit and keep the traceability records up to date. The other half of the job is administrative: booking appointments, explaining treatment estimates (devis) for crowns or orthodontics, checking what the patient's mutuelle will cover, billing with the Carte Vitale and ordering supplies. In larger centres or specialised practices (orthodontics, implantology), the role can be more focused on the chair or on the front desk.

Tips

  • Write the French name of your qualification (titre d'assistant dentaire) and the year you obtained it.
  • Say which specialties you have assisted in: general dentistry, implantology, orthodontics, periodontics, paediatric dentistry.
  • Name the practice software you know, as it is used for both clinical records and billing.
  • Show your share of chairside versus front desk work, since practices often look for one or the other.
  • Mention any training in radiation protection or emergency first aid (AFGSU).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting yourself as a 'nurse' in French: the French title is assistant dentaire, not infirmier.
  • Listing 'sterilisation' without explaining the circuit and traceability you handled.
  • Ignoring the administrative side, which is half of the role in most practices.
  • Sending a CV with no indication of your qualification status.

Working as a dental nurse in France

Assistant dentaire has been a recognised health profession in France since 2016, so you need the title of assistant dentaire, usually prepared through a work-study programme in a practice while attending an approved training centre. A more advanced level (assistant dentaire de niveau 2) allows trained assistants to carry out some clinical tasks under the dentist's supervision. Foreign qualifications must be recognised before using the title. The British term « dental nurse » has no French nursing equivalent here. Search for « assistant dentaire », « assistante dentaire », « aide dentaire » or « assistante dentaire qualifiée ».

Frequently asked questions

Is a qualification required to work as a dental nurse in France?

Yes. Assistant dentaire is a recognised health profession, and you need the corresponding title, usually obtained through training in alternance while working in a practice. A practice can hire you as a trainee during that training. Foreign qualifications must be recognised before you can use the title.

Should I separate clinical and administrative tasks on my CV?

Yes, it helps. Use two short groups of bullets, one for chairside work and sterilisation, one for scheduling, estimates and billing. Recruiters can then see quickly whether you fit a chairside role, a coordination role or a mixed one.

Can I apply to an orthodontic practice with only general dentistry experience?

Yes. Orthodontic practices see many children and teenagers, with short, frequent appointments and a lot of explaining to parents. Highlight your scheduling skills, your patience with young patients and your sterilisation routine, and say that you are ready to learn the bracket and aligner workflow.
