Car salesperson resume example

A car salesperson works in a dealership, selling new vehicles for a brand, used vehicles, or both. The day mixes showroom visits, calls to leads coming from the brand's website and online classifieds, test drives, and follow-up of customers whose car is on order.

A sale involves more than the car itself: you value the customer's trade-in after an inspection, build a financing offer (credit, leasing with purchase option or long-term rental), propose extended warranties and maintenance contracts, and handle the registration paperwork. Then you organise the handover, often the moment customers remember most. Targets are set monthly by vehicle volume and margin, and a large part of the pay is variable. Saturdays and brand open days are the busiest moments.

Working as a car salesperson in France

Search for vendeur automobile, conseiller commercial automobile, vendeur VN (véhicules neufs) or vendeur VO (véhicules d'occasion). The usual routes are the TFP Vendeur automobile run by the motor trade training network, or a BTS in sales such as the BTS NDRC, often prepared in work-study within a dealership. The job is not regulated, but a full driving licence is required for test drives and vehicle movements. Selling consumer credit and leasing is supervised in France, and dealerships train their advisors on the information duties towards borrowers. Most dealerships belong to large dealer groups representing several brands, which offer mobility between sites.

Frequently asked questions

How do I show sales performance on my resume?

Give your volumes and target achievement with numbers you can prove, or use placeholders if you prefer to discuss them in interview. Add context: new or used vehicles, brand, type of dealership. Managers compare candidates on how they performed in a similar setting.

Should I separate new and used car experience?

Yes. Selling used cars involves more appraisal, preparation follow-up and pricing work, while new car sales depend more on brand offers and order follow-up. Saying clearly what you did helps the manager place you in the right team.

Is it worth mentioning electric vehicle knowledge?

Yes. Customers ask many questions about range, charging at home and public incentives, and dealerships need advisors who can answer them precisely. Mention any brand training on electric models and your own experience of the vehicles.
