Car mechanic resume example

A car mechanic in France (mécanicien automobile, increasingly called technicien automobile) maintains and repairs petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars in a dealership workshop, an independent garage or a fast-fit centre.

The job order comes from the service desk: a scheduled service, a warning light, a noise when braking. You plug in the diagnostic tool, read fault codes, then check what the software cannot see: worn brake pads, a leaking shock absorber, a cracked belt. You replace parts following the manufacturer's procedure and torque settings, update on-board software, recharge air conditioning, and road test the car before handing it back. Electric and hybrid vehicles require an electrical safety qualification before you touch the high-voltage system. Garages also expect you to explain your findings clearly to the service adviser so the customer can approve extra work.

Tips

  • List diplomas and certificates first: CAP, Bac pro, BTS, refrigerant certificate, electrical safety level.
  • Name the brands and diagnostic tools you know; dealerships look for brand experience.
  • Separate servicing, mechanical repair and electronics so the recruiter sees your level.
  • Mention apprenticeships with the garage name: they count as real experience in France.
  • Add your driving licence, needed to road test and move vehicles.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing 'all mechanical work' without detail.
  • Forgetting the electrical safety qualification for hybrid and electric cars.
  • Leaving out manufacturer training sessions.
  • Not showing progression from apprentice to autonomous mechanic.

Working as a car mechanic in France

Search for mécanicien automobile, mécanicien VL (véhicules légers), technicien automobile or technicien après-vente for dealerships, and mécanicien service rapide for fast-fit chains. Working as a salaried mechanic is not regulated, but employers expect a CAP or Bac pro maintenance des véhicules, a BTS for technical roles, or an equivalent titre professionnel. Air conditioning work requires a refrigerant handling certificate, and electric or hybrid vehicles require an electrical safety qualification. Opening your own repair garage requires a recognised qualification or professional experience. Apprenticeship is a very common route into the trade.

Frequently asked questions

Which diploma do French garages expect?

The CAP maintenance des véhicules, option voitures particulières, is the usual entry level. The Bac pro maintenance des véhicules leads to more diagnostic work, and the BTS to technical roles in dealerships. Titres professionnels for adults are also accepted. Give the French name so recruiters recognise it.

Is my foreign experience recognised?

The job is not regulated, so garages judge mainly on what you can do. Describe the makes, systems and tools you have worked on, and expect a practical trial. A formal validation of experience (VAE) can lead to a French diploma if you want one.

Do I need certification for electric cars?

Yes. Working on vehicles with high-voltage systems requires an electrical safety qualification adapted to the task, issued by the employer after training. Put the exact level on your resume, as it decides which jobs you can be given.
