Airline pilot cover letter example

A pilot cover letter is short and factual. Airlines read it alongside your licences and logbook data, then decide whether to invite you to the selection process (technical test, group exercise, simulator check, interview).

It should show you know the company's operation and why your profile fits its fleet and base.

Subject: Application: First Officer A320, [Airline], [Base]

Dear Recruitment Team,

I am applying for the A320 first officer position based in [Base]. I hold an EASA ATPL (frozen) with an A320 type rating and have flown [x] hours, including [x] on type, with [Current Airline] on European short-haul routes.

My current operation involves up to [x] sectors a day, quick turnarounds and frequent winter operations, which has taught me to keep a steady pace without cutting corners on briefings and checklists. Last winter, on a flight to [Airport], we faced a runway change and a deteriorating weather report during approach; the decision to hold and reassess, shared clearly with the captain and the cabin crew, ended with a stabilised approach and an uneventful landing. I took part in the debrief that followed and in the related safety report.

Your network from [Base] and the development of your fleet match the type of flying I want to build on, and I am motivated by the prospect of a command upgrade in a structured training system. I speak French and English fluently, with ICAO level [x].

I am ready to take part in your selection and simulator assessment. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours faithfully,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • Licences, type rating and total hours, in one sentence
  • Fit with the airline's fleet, network and base
  • An example of crew cooperation or decision making
  • Readiness for the selection simulator and type training
  • Mobility and language skills

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing about the passion for flying since childhood and nothing about operations.
  • Repeating the whole logbook instead of the key figures.
  • Not adapting the letter to the airline's base and fleet.
  • Using informal tone or unexplained aviation jargon.

Frequently asked questions

Do cadet programmes ask for a cover letter?

Many do, either as a letter or as written questions in the online form. Selection then relies on aptitude tests, group exercises and interviews. Use the letter to show your understanding of the job, your reliability and how you will handle long, demanding training.

Should I write to an airline that is not recruiting?

You can, but keep it brief and make sure your profile meets their usual minimums. Many airlines only accept applications through their online portal during recruitment campaigns, so check that before sending anything.

How long should a pilot cover letter be?

One page, four or five short paragraphs. Your licences, hours and ratings appear once, and the rest is about your operational experience and fit with the airline. Recruiters read many applications and appreciate a letter that gets to the point.
