Winegrower resume example

A viticulteur grows grapes and, as a vigneron, often makes and sells the wine too. On a typical estate, you plan the work in the vines through the year, decide on treatments according to weather and disease pressure, organise pruning and harvest teams, and choose the picking date with tasting and ripeness checks.

If you vinify, you follow fermentation, ageing, blending and bottling in the cellar. Many winegrowers also handle sales: tastings at the estate, wine fairs, wine shops, restaurants and export customers. Others deliver grapes to a cooperative cellar (cave coopérative) and focus on the vineyard. The job is shaped by the rules of the appellation (AOC or IGP), which set grape varieties, yields and practices, and by the administrative side: harvest declarations, customs records for wine and certification audits.

Tips

  • Specify whether you grow only, make wine, or also sell: these are three different profiles.
  • Name appellations and grape varieties you have worked with.
  • Mention the certifications (organic, HVE, biodynamic) you have managed.
  • Highlight team management if you aim for a vineyard manager post.
  • Add any sales or export experience, which is valued by estates selling bottles directly.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting a love of wine instead of agricultural and technical skills.
  • Not mentioning the size of the estate or plots managed.
  • Forgetting the administrative side: declarations, records, audits.
  • Listing every tasting course while leaving out vineyard experience.

Working as a winegrower in France

Winegrower is not a regulated job in France, but setting up with public installation aid requires an agricultural professional capacity, usually a Bac pro CGEV or the BPREA for adults. The BTSA Viticulture-œnologie and the national diploma of oenologist are common for employed managers. Planting vines requires an authorisation, and appellation rules (AOC, IGP) set varieties, yields and practices. Wine production also involves customs declarations. Search for « viticulteur », « vigneron », « chef de culture viticole », « responsable vignoble » or « régisseur de domaine ».

Frequently asked questions

Can I be hired as a winegrower or only set up my own estate?

Both. Many winegrowers own or rent their land, but estates and groups also hire vineyard managers (chef de culture) and managers of a whole property. These posts usually ask for a BTSA Viticulture-œnologie or a national diploma of oenologist and solid experience.

What diploma do I need to set up as a winegrower?

None is legally required to farm, but to receive young farmer installation aid you need the agricultural professional capacity, usually through a Bac pro CGEV or a BPREA, plus a personalised training plan (plan de professionnalisation personnalisé). Career changers often choose the BPREA, which is designed for adults.

Should I show foreign harvest experience?

Yes. Harvests or internships in other wine countries show curiosity and adaptability, and estates working in export appreciate them. Explain briefly what you did, and connect it to French practices, as appellation rules here are more restrictive than in many New World regions.
