Train driver resume example

A train driver in France drives passenger or freight trains on the national rail network, on RER lines in the Paris region or on tram-train lines, alone in the cab and responsible for the safety of the train.

Before departure, the driver takes over the rolling stock, runs the brake test and checks the documents for the day: speed restrictions, engineering works and the composition of the train. On the line, they read signals, respect the timetable, talk to the signallers by radio and react to incidents such as a person on the track, a technical fault or a passenger emergency. Freight drivers also handle shunting and coupling in marshalling yards. Shifts start very early or end late, include weekends and public holidays, and often involve nights away from home (découchers) at the end of a run.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Electrical maintenance technician with a BTS in electrotechnics, applying to a train driver training programme. I work with safety procedures, lockout and technical diagnosis every day and am used to shift work. I have passed a medical check and am ready for the psychological aptitude tests.

Experienced

Train driver holding the European licence and certificates for [rolling stock types] and the [region] network. [x] years on regional passenger services, with experience of degraded mode operation, incident reporting and mentoring newly qualified drivers.

Career change

Former long-distance truck driver moving to rail. I am used to driving alone for long periods, irregular hours and nights away, and to strict regulations on rest and safety. I want to join a training class to become a passenger train driver.

Tips

  • Write out your licence and the rolling stock and lines covered by your complementary certificate: this tells an operator how fast you can be deployed.
  • For a first application, highlight technical training (electricity, mechanics, maintenance) and any experience of shift work.
  • Show your respect for procedures with a concrete example from a safety-driven job.
  • Mention your geographic mobility and acceptance of nights away, which operators check.
  • Keep personal interests short but include anything that shows concentration or endurance.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting a passion for trains as the main argument: recruiters look for rigour and stability.
  • Leaving out the type of operation you know (passenger, freight, urban, shunting).
  • Not mentioning that you accept irregular hours and weekends.
  • Confusing the role with that of the onboard controller (contrôleur, ASCT).

Working as a train driver in France

Train driving is regulated in France by the transposition of the European directive on train driver certification. A driver needs a European train driver licence, issued after training, medical and psychological fitness checks, plus a complementary certificate from the employer for each type of rolling stock and network section. Operators such as SNCF Voyageurs, RATP for RER lines and private passenger and freight companies run their own training, open to candidates with a secondary education level. Fluent French is required for safety communication. Search for « conducteur de train », « conducteur de ligne », « conducteur TER », « conducteur fret » or « élève conducteur ».

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rail diploma to apply as a trainee train driver?

No specific diploma is required to start the training, which is provided by the employer. A secondary school level is expected, and a technical diploma in electricity, electronics or mechanics is an advantage. Selection relies heavily on medical fitness and psychological aptitude tests.

How should I describe my licence on a CV?

State the European train driver licence and then the complementary certificate: which rolling stock you are qualified on and which lines or network sections you know. Operators use this to judge how much extra route learning you would need before driving for them.

Is freight driving experience valued for a passenger job?

Yes, the core skills are shared: signalling, safety rules, braking and incident handling. Make the difference explicit by mentioning any contact with passengers or public address use, and show that you can adapt to tighter timetables and station stops.
