Pharmacist resume example

Most pharmacists in France work in a community pharmacy (officine), either as owner (titulaire) or as employed pharmacist (pharmacien adjoint).

Behind the counter, the core of the job is checking every prescription before it is dispensed: dosages, interactions, contraindications, and whether a generic can be substituted. You answer questions about over-the-counter medicines, decide when a patient should see a doctor instead, and supervise the pharmacy technicians who prepare orders. The role has widened in recent years: French pharmacists now vaccinate, run rapid tests, hold follow-up interviews with patients on anticoagulants or asthma treatment, and handle some minor conditions under set protocols. There are also night and weekend duty shifts (gardes). Outside the officine, pharmacists work in hospitals, in the pharmaceutical industry on quality and regulatory affairs, in wholesale distribution and in medical biology laboratories.

Tips

  • Give your track (officine, hospital, industry) and your DES if you have one: it determines which posts you can hold.
  • List the services you can deliver yourself, such as vaccination or interviews, since pharmacies build their offer around them.
  • Name the pharmacy software you know; pharmacies change software rarely and training costs time.
  • Mention your Ordre registration section if you are already registered.
  • For industry posts, use the vocabulary of the field: batch release, deviations, CAPA, audits.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every internship from the early years of the degree instead of the final-year placement.
  • Calling yourself 'pharmacist' without saying whether you are registered and in which section.
  • Ignoring the weekend and duty shift question, which matters to every officine.
  • Using a single CV for officine, hospital and industry applications.

Working as a pharmacist in France

Pharmacist is a regulated profession in France. You need the Diplôme d'État de docteur en pharmacie and registration with the Ordre national des pharmaciens before you can practise; hospital pharmacy and medical biology also require the relevant DES obtained through the internship. Pharmacists with an EU diploma can usually have it recognised, while non-EU graduates go through an authorisation procedure with knowledge tests. Only pharmacists may own a community pharmacy. Search for « pharmacien adjoint », « pharmacien d'officine », « pharmacien hospitalier » or « pharmacien assurance qualité ».

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply as a pharmacist before my Ordre registration is complete?

Yes, you can apply, but you cannot practise as a pharmacist until registration is done. Say on your CV that the application is in progress and give the expected date. Pharmacies are used to hiring graduates during this period and may adapt the start date.

What should a hospital pharmacist CV highlight?

Your internship (internat) rotations and your DES, then the specific units you worked in: sterile preparations, chemotherapy, medical devices, clinical pharmacy on the wards. Mention any medication reconciliation work, as hospitals recruit for that activity specifically.

Is English useful for a pharmacist in France?

In community pharmacy, English helps in tourist areas, big cities and near international schools, but French is the working language. In the pharmaceutical industry, English is often required for documentation, audits and contacts with the group's other sites, so state your level clearly.
