Data analyst resume example

A data analyst turns company data into answers that managers can act on. Requests arrive from marketing, sales, finance or operations: why did conversions drop last week, which stores sell below expectations, which customers are about to leave.

You write SQL queries on the data warehouse, clean and join the data, check that the figures make sense, then present the result in a dashboard (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) or a short presentation. Part of the job is maintaining recurring dashboards and fixing them when a source changes. In France, the job also involves respecting GDPR rules on personal data, with the data protection officer (DPO) watching how customer data is used. Titles vary: data analyst, business analyst, chargé d'études statistiques, or BI analyst in more technical teams.

Tips

  • For each experience, say which business decision your analysis supported.
  • Name your tools precisely: SQL dialect, BI tool, cloud warehouse.
  • Add a link to a portfolio or a public dashboard built on open data, such as data.gouv.fr datasets.
  • Show both technical work (models, queries) and communication (presentations, training).
  • Adapt the title to the ad: data analyst, BI analyst or business analyst.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A list of tools with no example of insight or decision.
  • Showing a portfolio made only of tutorial datasets everyone uses.
  • Overstating machine learning experience for an analyst role.
  • Sharing screenshots containing real customer or company data.

Working as a data analyst in France

Data analyst is not a regulated job in France. Employers usually ask for a Bac+3 to Bac+5 in statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering or business with a data specialisation; the ENSAE and ENSAI schools train statisticians, and many universities offer data master's degrees. Career changers often come through recognised training programmes. Working with personal data means following GDPR rules supervised by the CNIL. Search with « data analyst », « analyste de données », « chargé d'études statistiques », « business analyst » and « analyste BI ».

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a master's degree to be a data analyst in France?

Many employers ask for a Bac+5 in statistics, data science, engineering or business with a data specialisation. Career changers with a recognised training programme and strong SQL also get hired, especially in start-ups and mid-sized companies, if they show real projects.

What is the difference between data analyst and data scientist?

The data analyst answers business questions with existing data, mostly through SQL, dashboards and statistics. The data scientist builds predictive models and works more with machine learning. In smaller French companies, one person often covers both.

Should I use open data for my portfolio?

Yes. French open data from data.gouv.fr or INSEE is a good source and shows interest in the local context. Pick a question, clean the data, and present the answer in a dashboard or short write-up, as you would at work.
