The profession is regulated: you must hold a veterinary degree recognised in France and be registered with the Ordre national des vétérinaires before practising. French vets study at one of the national veterinary schools and receive the Diplôme d'État de docteur vétérinaire. Degrees from EU countries are generally recognised automatically; graduates from other countries usually have to pass a knowledge assessment before registration. Rural and mixed vets also need the habilitation sanitaire granted by the prefecture to carry out official health tasks. Good French is essential, since you consult and write prescriptions in French.
