Surgeon cover letter example

In surgery, the letter is read by the head of department or the clinic's medical board. It should explain why this team, what you bring to its activity and how you fit into its on-call organisation.

Specific procedures, techniques and projects carry more weight than general statements about vocation.

Subject: Application: visceral surgeon position, [Hospital], [City]

Dear Professor [Name],

I am writing to apply for the visceral and digestive surgeon position in your department. I am currently chef de clinique assistant at [Hospital], where I have spent the last two years working on the colorectal surgery team after completing my DES in visceral and digestive surgery.

My practice is centred on laparoscopic colorectal surgery and abdominal wall repair. I operate autonomously on scheduled colectomies and on most digestive emergencies, and I take part in the on-call rota for the department and the emergency unit. With the anaesthesia team, I helped build an enhanced recovery pathway for colorectal patients, which is now applied to all eligible cases.

I know your department is developing robot-assisted surgery and ambulatory pathways for abdominal wall repair. I completed the robotic surgery training programme at [Training centre] last year and would like to contribute to this activity, while taking my share of the general visceral workload and the teaching of interns.

I would be pleased to meet you and the team to discuss the department's projects and how I could fit into your organisation.

Yours sincerely,Dr [First Name Last Name]

Frequently asked questions

Should I contact the head of department before applying?

In French hospitals, posts are often discussed informally before being advertised. A short email or a meeting at a congress to introduce yourself is common and well accepted. The formal letter then refers to that conversation and confirms your interest.

How is a letter to a private clinic different?

Clinics recruit independent surgeons who will bring and manage their own patient flow. Talk about your activity, your referral network, your sector of fees if you are already installed, and how you will share the on-call rota with the surgeons already there.

Do I need to write in French?

Yes. Registration with the Ordre requires sufficient French, and you will speak French with patients and teams every day. A letter in French is the first proof that you can obtain informed consent and write operative reports in the language of the hospital.
