Subject: Application for Optician position, [Store], [City]

Dear [Name],

Your ad for an optician at the [City] store mentions a clientele of families and older people. Taking the time to help those customers choose and understand their lenses is the part of the job I enjoy most.

I earned my BTS Opticien-lunetier at [School] and have worked for [x] years at [Store]. I carry out sight tests and adapt recent prescriptions within the legal framework, take centring measurements and mount lenses in the workshop. I have developed a speciality in progressive lenses for first-time wearers: I take time to explain how they work, adjust the frames carefully and schedule a follow-up visit, which reduces returns.

I also fit contact lenses and handle third-party payment with mutuelles, explaining to customers what will be reimbursed before they commit. I believe good advice is the best way to build loyalty and to meet sales targets.

I am available for an interview from [Date] and can bring my diploma and references.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Your diploma or authorisation to practise
  • Sight tests and prescription adaptation
  • Specialities: progressive lenses, contact lenses, low vision
  • Workshop skills
  • Customer advice and mutuelle handling

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving out the BTS Opticien-lunetier, which the store must verify before hiring.
  • A letter focused only on sales.
  • Saying nothing about workshop work: edging, mounting and adjustments.
  • Sending the same letter to a premium independent store and a discount chain.

Frequently asked questions

Should I attach my diploma?

Not at first. Mention it clearly in your letter and resume. The employer will ask for a copy before hiring, since it is a legal requirement to practise. If your qualification was recognised by a French authority, keep that decision ready as well.

How do I present a career change into optics?

Explain why you chose optics, highlight your customer service experience and your recent BTS or training. Show that you understand the health side of the job and not only the sales side.

Can I apply in English?

For French stores, write in French. Customers and mutuelle procedures are in French. If you are still improving your French, mention your level honestly and the languages you speak, which can help in tourist or international areas.
